As one of the most prominent global manufacturers of excavator buckets, quick couplers, and other attachments for the international construction equipment supply chain, we attribute our success to the people who shape our identity today. We believe in empowering and investing in our workforce to pave the way for our future accomplishments and worldwide expansion and driving the changes that matter.
Recently, our in-house marketing team welcomed an eager and creative second-year marketing student from Newcastle University, embarking on a 12-month internship. This specialised marketing internship aims to provide diverse work experiences, pushing the boundaries of marketing to ensure that our globally recognised brand and innovative earthmoving attachments continue to lead the way in our customers’ journey with Miller.
We had the opportunity to catch up with Laura Marsden at the beginning of her placement to discover what attracted her to the Miller Marketing Internship and her eagerness to contribute to the success of various marketing and communication projects for Miller throughout the next year.
Q1. What are you studying at university and what has the course taught you so far?
Upon finishing my second year of study in Marketing and Management at Newcastle University, I found great enjoyment in exploring modules like global marketing, managing change, human resources and consumer behaviour. This diverse selection of courses has not only broadened my understanding of essential marketing principles but has also honed my ability to think critically and navigate challenges. Furthermore, my course encouraged me to question existing business practices and embrace innovative approaches, preparing me to help companies adapt successfully in both local and global markets.
Q2. What fuelled your interest in marketing?
Since studying business at A-Level my interest in marketing peaked. The marketing industry is constantly growing and changing, it excites me to think I can be part of that change and how the business adapts with it.
During my time at university, I managed the social media of our university football team. Creating engaging social media posts for the team opened my eyes to the power of digital marketing in connecting with audiences. A key part of my role was producing and editing videos for their TikTok account, including football challenges based on current trends. In addition, I introduced live streaming of weekly games with the aim to allow friends and family to watch the games from home, whilst also expanding the following of the team. This proved successful as the teams’ Instagram following increased since beginning the live streams, as well as increasing numbers joining the lives each week.
Q3. What will you bring to the marketing team through the placement?
Throughout my placement I hope to assist Miller in its growth of social media marketing globally, with a particular focus on TikTok and Instagram where I believe my experience will be of use. I am enthusiastic about contributing to the creation of content for Facebook and LinkedIn, both of which are integral parts of Miller’s digital marketing strategy. I am eager to bring fresh and innovative ideas to the table, with a focus on expanding the company’s following on these platforms.
Furthermore, my past volunteering experience at a local charity shop has equipped me with valuable skills that I believe will be highly beneficial in my role at Miller. From customer service expertise to strong organisational skills, I am confident in my ability to make a meaningful impact and contribute to the company’s success.
Q4. What aspects of the placement excite you and what do you want to get out of it?
This placement offers me the opportunity to expand on the knowledge and abilities I have acquired throughout my degree and marketing for the football team. I am excited to learn new skills and gain real-world experience in marketing for a world leading attachment company. I am keen to develop my understanding of the different sectors Miller operates in and fully immerse myself into exhibitions and other marketing activities.
Q5. What do you want your future to look like?
In the future, I see myself working in the marketing industry as it continues to grow and new ways of working are being introduced – making the industry particularly exciting to me. Social media platforms are rapidly growing demonstrating the importance of digital marketing for businesses. Furthermore, a career in marketing will allow me to be creative and innovative given the dynamic nature of the industry which is another aspect that appeals to me, and I am excited to see the new trends and developments the industry has to offer in the coming years.
